How to Clean and Inspect Carbon Fibre Accessories After a Wet Commute

Why Wet Rides Demand Immediate Attention

A wet commute on your Dualtron Thunder 2 or Kaabo Wolf King GT Pro is exhilarating, but water, grit, and road salt are working against your carbon fibre components the moment you park up. Acting within the first hour after a wet ride protects your investment and keeps critical parts performing as engineered.

Carbon fibre itself does not corrode, but the resin matrix, hardware, and bonded interfaces are all vulnerable to prolonged moisture exposure. Small cracks in the clear coat or resin surface can allow water ingress that degrades the laminate from the inside out over time.

The Right Way to Clean Carbon Fibre After a Wet Ride

Start with a gentle rinse using low-pressure water to flush loose grit away from the surface. Never use a pressure washer directly on carbon fibre accessories. The concentrated jet can force water under the clear coat and into any micro-fractures in the resin.

Use a clean microfibre cloth and a pH-neutral soap solution to wipe down all surfaces. Avoid abrasive sponges or brushes, which will introduce fine scratches into the clear coat and dull the weave pattern of your 3K plain weave or T700 6K carbon fibre components over time.

  • Use pH-neutral automotive soap or a dedicated composite cleaner

  • Work in straight lines along the weave direction, not circular motions

  • Pay extra attention to recessed areas where grit accumulates

  • Rinse with clean water and dry immediately with a fresh microfibre cloth

  • Allow components to air dry fully before storage or reinstallation

Road salt is particularly aggressive. If you have ridden through salted winter roads, a second rinse with clean water after soaping is essential to remove all salt residue from hardware mounting points and bonded edges.

How to Inspect Carbon Fibre for Damage After a Wet Ride

Once the component is clean and dry, move to a well-lit area for a thorough visual inspection. Natural daylight or a bright LED work light held at a low angle to the surface will reveal surface anomalies that overhead lighting misses.

Run clean, dry fingertips slowly across the entire surface. Your sense of touch will detect raised edges, soft spots, or delamination that your eyes might overlook on a glossy finish.

  • Look for whitish or cloudy patches beneath the clear coat, which indicate moisture trapped in the laminate

  • Check for hairline cracks radiating from mounting holes or bolt contact points

  • Inspect bonded edges for any lifting or separation of the resin layer

  • Examine all stainless steel or titanium hardware for surface rust that could stain the surrounding laminate

  • Tap lightly across flat sections and listen for a dull thud rather than a crisp sound, which can indicate internal delamination

If you detect any soft spots or internal delamination through the tap test, remove the component from your Nami Burn-E 2 Max or Vsett 10+ immediately. Riding on a structurally compromised carbon fibre part is not worth the risk.

Protecting the Surface Between Rides

After cleaning and inspection, apply a thin layer of carnauba wax or a dedicated carbon fibre sealant to all exposed surfaces. This creates a hydrophobic barrier that makes the next wet commute cleanup significantly faster.

Avoid silicone-based products near mounting points or bonded interfaces. Silicone contamination prevents any future adhesive repair from bonding correctly to the laminate surface.

Store your Zero 11X or Dualtron Storm Limited in a dry environment whenever possible. Prolonged storage in damp conditions accelerates hardware corrosion and can slowly compromise the resin matrix even on undamaged components.
