E-Scooter Safety: How to Ride Smarter and Be Seen (2026 Guide)

E-scooter safety is back in the spotlight — and most incidents come down to a handful of habits. Here's a practical guide, no lecture.
The two cheapest upgrades to your safety are being visible and slowing down before you need to.
Be seen
Most collisions happen because a driver didn't see the rider. Run a white front light and a red rear light after dusk, add reflective elements to your deck and ankles, and assume you're invisible until you've made eye contact. Bright clothing beats dark every time.
Pre-ride checklist
Thirty seconds before you set off can save a crash. Run through this every ride:
Brakes — both engage firmly with no sponginess.
Tyres — correct pressure, no cuts or low tread.
Folding latch — fully locked, with zero play in the stem.
Bolts — stem, handlebar and folding clamp all tight.
Lights and battery — charged and working.
Protect yourself
A helmet is non-negotiable — most serious e-scooter injuries are to the head. Gloves protect your hands in a fall, and closed shoes beat sandals. Match your speed to your gear and your surroundings: high speed leaves no margin for error.
Ride predictably
Treat yourself like traffic: signal your turns, hold a straight line, and don't weave between cars. On shared paths, slow down and give way to pedestrians. Predictable riders are safe riders — surprises cause crashes.
None of this needs new gear — just better habits. Ride aware, stay visible, and check before you roll.
